What's the Difference Between Ford Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid?

Ford plug-in hybrids and standard hybrids are equipped with both a gasoline engine and battery-powered electric motor combination. The vehicles run as electric vehicles based on driving conditions, monitored by an onboard computer. The engine automatically switches between the electric motor and the standard combustion engine as needed.

The battery pack for both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid is recharged while the gas engine is in use. The battery is also recharged by absorbing the electricity created during braking, a process called regenerative braking.

The differentiating feature between the two is that the battery pack of a plug-in hybrid has a third option for recharging: a convenient at-home charger that charges the battery while you sleep. This allows you to drive your vehicle in all-electric mode for short trips.
